I don’t know if other brands of icing tips/couplers are much different, but if they are you will need to improvise to keep the icing tip secure. We are using a Wilton brand decorating tip (#4 Round) with a Wilton brand Coupler, which fits snugly in the bracket I have designed (see picture below). For smooth operation of the squeeze roller it is best to fold the sides of the icing bag in on itself as you drape it over the squeeze plate, before securing it in the back. Be sure to adjust the height of the ‘ice stopper’ so that it blocks the end of the icing tip when it’s not icing.

You will probably get icing everywhere, especially if it is too runny. Don’t expect it to work perfectly the first time you try it.

You may have to experiment to find the right balance. It’s hard to describe the ideal consistency, but it’s probably about the same as you would want if you were icing the cookies by hand. If it is too thick you won’t get a complete design. If it is too runny you will get a blobby mess. The most important factor to successfully icing a cookie is the consistency of the icing. I haven’t put together instructions for the hand robot. Instructions for building the the black box can be found in my original blog post. The hand would always trigger it anyway, since it is always above the sensor. Since it is telling the hand what to do, it always knows what is going on. It doesn’t use the proximity sensor to detect when the hand is there though. It responds to the switch being turned off the same way it always has, using the light sensor inside. It sends messages to the hand robot to tell it what to do, then it either does an evasive maneuver, or waits for the hand to turn the switch off. Kudos to the EV3 team for such a fantastic implementation!ĭespite what it might look like, the black box robot is actually driving the entire sequence. I have to say, I was super impressed with the ease and performance of this feature.

The black box and the hand robot coordinate their behaviors using the Mindstorms Bluetooth capabilities. There is actually some cool programming going on here. So, when the kids reach for the chocolate, we can trigger the skeleton hand closing or the spider jumping forward, to (hopefully) give the kids a little scare. To make it a little more interesting, I programmed a couple of behaviours that can be activated using EV3 remote control. The kids can then pick up the chocolate from the hand. This will activate the feed mechanism, pushing a chocolate onto a conveyor belt, delivering it to the skeleton hand at the front. To activate the machine, the kids press down on the pumpkin, which is mounted in front of a touch sensor. It uses the same gravity feed mechanism, but that’s where the similarities end. I decided not to constrain myself to the pieces in the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit this time, so it is a little more elaborate. Halloween is only a couple of days away, and this year I decided to expand on my chocolate thrower from last year, to help deliver mini chocolates to the kids who come to our door.
